Gundam War Project Overview

Gundam War is a card game based on the Gundam franchise. In Japan, Gundam War premiered around 1999, and has been going strong ever since. Booster 19 has recently been launched (August, 2007) and there are 6,000+ Japanese cards to the game so far. In 2005, Bandai America Incorperated ported Gundam War over into English. However, due to lousy marketing and a lack of advertizing (and a lack of general knowledge by fans about the game and it's existence... ), the game was cancelled at Booster 3 (Binding Fate) with about 650 cards.

Because of the lousy way the game was handled, and because the fans love the game (the Japanese version has an established fanbase in North America that is growing fast and strong), the fans have mobilized a project to get Gundam War Back in English!

Edit: Because of certain circumstances, CCG Armory isn't going to be helping us right now (possibly in the future, though).

Plan B: (or Plan A v2) We get the Database up-and-running, get the forums hooked up, translate the whole thing into Japanese (as well as English), get the cards Scanlated (about 600 total, at least -enough for each colour to have good coverage).

The Database would include (high-quality) card scans for every card, card text on the pages (both in English and Japanese), and a search engine that tels you search by Series, Card Name, Unit Number, etc. At some point, Character and Unit profiles, Combos & Strategies, Series write-ups, etc. This would be an indespensible player resource (both in English and Japanese, making it *The* largest multi-national Gundam War player database ever to exist, as far as I know... ), and we advertize the *Database* on Pojo.com, instead of a 4th series.

If we can get some people in Japan knowing about this, then the English fanbase would be indirectly-contacted through knowing the Japanese player resources, and spreading the word~ That way, we get on both Bandai Japan's and Bandai America's radars, and we can put out a poll asking of people would support GW coming back in English, what their concerns would be, etc., and take it from there (both Bandai Japan and Bandai America would be able to view that poll, since it would be a public message board, and then we can make another bid to CCG Armory if the poll results are favourable~ ). The Database will probably go up in early November, when we get the server accessable.

We can also help establish fanbases in other countries, and other languages, if we can get dedicated translators for those languages -if we have all the cards to scanlate, that means any other languages that the game would get done in would only require a translator and editor to do the work (and of the translator would be willing to update the Database, we can get the Database in several different languages as well~ ).

Bandai has told us that for the game to be 'viable' (make enough money to be worth keeping around) each series would have to sell out around 15,000 ~ 20,000 12-pack boxes per series. Now historicaly, each series has had 200-ish cards in it and has come 6 months apart. So we'd need an average of 5,000 - 7,000 people each buying an average of 3 12-pack boxes (36 packs) per series. CCG Armory is listing a box as $47, so that would be like spending $24 a month just to keep the game alive... Already, each production run of Series 1 and 2 sold out an equivelent of 8,333 12-pack boxes each, which is already half-way to the goal (and that was when less-than-half of the fanbase was buying!).

As such, we're prepairing promo material for people to print and play with. The reason for this is because *most* of the already-printed English cards are sold out and unavailable (and have errors on them -you can find a list soon in this site's Gundam War section). The Promo Cards have the 'Crossbone Ensignia' on them, so they can't be used for pirating.

CCG Armory has decided to back us and has given a page on their site to take pre-orders for the purpose of reaching the 15,000 ~ 20,000 goal (and will get back to me with monthly progress reports on how many orders there are, and how many are paid for). If you're going to order, please only order as much as you'd be able to pay for within a regular 3-month period (we want to try and prove we have market stability for the game). If you've saved up and want to order more than that, please wait until Series 4 is officialy announced or until we make a statement here on how often a series would be released and how many packs we still need to order. Also, please pay with Money Order or PayPal, as Credit Cards aren't charged until the product is shipped, and being able to tell Bandai that we have x amount of boxes *already paid for* is alot more of incentive than simply saying we have empty orders...

Anyone who wishes to download the Promo Material can do so here (and from the Gundam pages on my site).

Anyone who wishes to place a pre-order (Series 4 of Gundam War is not officialy announced yet; we're trying to get it back with orders) can place it here: http://www.ccgarmory.com/set4boosterbox.html If you're going to order, please only order at CCG Armory (that page) until the game is announced as being restarted. We're also going for a solidified power base, and we *know* that CCG Armory will put our demand through to Bandai America. After the series is released, order as much as you want at your local stores~

To make things clear (for those who think we're doing all the work and Bandai will just be raking in the profits), Bandai has stated that that they can't use outside (fan) translations without paying someone (for legal reasons), and the chances of our translators being hired is pretty close to zero since they both live in Singapore... Also, we're using the Japanese cards as-is for the promo material, while Bandai would *probably* still be using the English cards' layout (however, either way, what they do with the cards makes them of a *much* higher quality than we have the time *or* the means to do with the promo material).

The promo material is *purely* for promoting the game. The Card Database would be there as a player resource, and mainly intended at allowing the mods to preview each series before it goes to print for errors with accurate information (which, hopefully, Bandai would allow again if the game gets brought back). We will also have the latest Japanese Advanced Rulebook translated and on this site soon.
